I started writing this song as a reflection on the murder of George Floyd, the culture of racism and brutality that led to the unnecessary loss of life, and the incredibly incendiary fracture that tragic event created in an already severely divided American populace. After writing the lyrics and composing the first verse and chorus, it sat in my “unreleased” folder for a few years. Hateful politics and the lack of humanity continued to spread, and not just in the US. Blatant racism, sexism, nationalism, and anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric seemed to explode. January 6th happened. Putin waged war on Ukraine (again). Roe v. Wade overturned. Anti-LGBTQ+ bills filed (and many passed) nationally and globally. “So we kneel. So we shout. Trying in vain to find a way for us to all break out. From this world on fire.”

When human nature relies on fury
To take the pain away
We’re losing sight of what it means to care
Destroying random constructs
When the real target is too big to dare
