I’m excited about all of these songs, but it’s wonderful to finally be able to realize the arrangement of “Tonight” I’ve had in my head since I first saw West Side Story as a kid. I realize then and now that Bernstein wanted to reflect the excitement and anticipation of young love. But since both Tony and Maria have already had some very hard times, I always felt it should’ve been more restrained, rich, and melancholy. Like, “finally, I found someone I really love, but who knows what will happen.” It is Romeo and Juliet, after all.
